At least nine people were taken to local hospitals in Columbus, Ohio, after reports of an active shooter situation on the Ohio State University campus Monday.
A spokesperson for the Columbus Division of Fire, Rebecca Diem, confirmed to NPR that at least one of the nine transported was said to be in critical condition.
The university's Wexner Medical Center said in in a tweet that it was treating four victims, and that none had suffered life-threatening injuries.
It wasn't immediately clear how the injuries were sustained.
The university's emergency management division tweeted at 11:30 a.m. local time that the scene was secure and shelter in place warnings were now lifted.
It first tweeted a warning that read "Buckeye Alert: Active Shooter on campus. Run Hide Fight. Watts Hall," at 9:56 a.m. local time. Watts Hall houses the Materials Science and Engineering department.
Columbus Ohio Police said in a tweet that SWAT, K-9 units, negotiators and a helicopter unit were on the scene, with OSU Police taking the lead in the situation.
OSU classes are cancelled on this campus for the remainder of the day, the emergency management division tweeted, and the immediate area around the incident remains closed.
This is a breaking news story. As often happens in situations like these, some information reported early may turn out to be inaccurate. We'll move quickly to correct the record and we'll only point to the best information we have at the time.
